Armes class in Year 4 worked really hard this afternoon to secure their understanding of the geography of Europe in 1914 and the reasons why the war started. A comprehension task earlier in the week was followed up with some map work this afternoon, before the children had to write short statements on the role each of the 6 main countries – Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Belgium and Serbia – played in the start of the conflict. Alongside some large format copies of maps from The British Empire (1907) and Europe (1914), we also had an original Daily Telegraph Picture Map of Western Europe from WW1. Beautifully illustrated and very fragile! On an especially hot afternoon, they all worked purposefully as historians. Enjoy the gallery.
